Forest is an area covered with forest trees, with a minimum area of 0.05 ha, with a minimum 30% of crown cover.[1]

Stands with a crown density of at least 10% or at least 7 metres in height (FRA 1980).[2]

Stands with a crown density of at least 10% or at least 5 metres in height (FRA 1990).[3]

Land with tree crown cover (or equivalent stocking level) of more than 10% and an area of more than 0.5 hectares. The trees should be able to reach a minimum height of 5 metres at maturity in situ (FRA 2000).[4]
